This morning I read a post by @sally.clarkson and she said, “I take my small luxuries with joy. Somehow it is the small rhythms that provide light-filled moments to face my days.” If you stop to think about it, those are powerful thoughts.

I quickly made a mental list of some of my small, daily rhythms that bring me simple joy:
• morning yoga 🧘🏼‍♀️
• dark chocolate hidden in the back of my fridge
• listening to music … Beatles … Mozart …
• making & eating delicious food
• sunshine & my garden 👩🏼‍🌾

What are some simple things that bring you daily joy & help you face your day?

Peaches are one of my favorite fruits, so I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to them for the year. Today I’m sharing a simple peach sauce recipe that can jazz up so many foods. Think: pancakes, cottage cheese, ice cream, oatmeal, yogurt, French toast, pound cake … whatever you love to eat peaches with!! Heck! Smear it on your homemade bread!! You can make this recipe ahead of time - just store it in the fridge and use it cold or warm it back up when you’re ready to use it. This past weekend, we used it for a filling in sweet rolls and it was the bomb! Plus the perfect amount for a recipe that makes a dozen rolls.

🍑 Fresh Peach Sauce 🍑
• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
• 1 tablespoon cornstarch
• Splash of Vanilla
•2 heaping cups diced peaches (unpeeled is great!)

1. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan. Browned butter will add more depth to the flavor, but if that sounds intimidating, just melt it. 😁

2. Add the rest of the sauce ingredients to the melted butter and stir frequently until sauce comes to a slow boil & thickens.

3. Allow the sauce to cool for 5 or so minutes and use immediately or store it in an airtight container in the fridge for a couple days.

What’s your favorite part of your home, yard, or garden? This is currently mine! 😍 Totally out-of-control vines, lush, green, & yummy things to eat! It’s a spot that makes me happy. 🌱

This area has a Mexican lime (which fruits several times a year), a pecan, pomegranate, luffa, oodles of mint, and honeydew. It’s on the west side of my house where it’s so hot in the afternoons but the plants shade each other. ☀️

All this green helps me forget that I live in the desert!! 🌵

10 days are remaining in September. Now is a great time to plant!! Yesterday I planted red & green cabbage, broccoli🥦, cauliflower, a variety of lettuces🥬, and a couple edible flowers … dianthus and petunias. 🌸 We had an unexpected heavy rain last night so I’m glad I got my veggies in the ground so they could enjoy a good drink from the rain last night. 💦

I’m looking forward to planting seeds for radishes, beets, sugar daddy peas, and carrots very soon!

Did you know that you can grow sweet, juicy peaches in the desert? We have 6 peach trees in our front yard and two more in our backyard. Harvesting happens around Memorial Day and again in late July. If you’d like to have a couple peach trees, look for a variety of peach that requires fewer chill hours and plant them in a cooler or more shady part of your yard, if possible. We have Red Baron & Dwarf Bonanza peach trees that all require around 250 chill hours. There are other varieties that work well in zone 9b too. 🍑🍑🍑

As cooler weather is headed our way, start planning & thinking about where you can add a peach tree or two to your yard. My favorite is the Dwarf Bonanza which I’ve seen sold in my local Costco as well as nurseries. We usually buy our peach trees as bare root and plant around January.

Once you have beautiful peaches growing in your yard, you become an instant gardener! 👩🏼‍🌾👨🏻‍🌾

Lift your spirits and make yourself a gorgeous breakfast full of color, flavor, and texture. 🌈Perfect for a special brunch, Mom’s birthday, or anytime you want to impress someone!! You don’t have to be a great cook to make this!

Mint grows year round in my yard so I’m always looking for ways to enjoy it. A little bit sprinkled on your granola is refreshing and doesn’t need to be overpowering. Mint is gut soothing & has brain boosting powers!! It is also rich in nutrients, boosts your immunity, gives acne-free skin, and soothes breastfeeding pains. 🤱🏼

Homemade granola will take your dish to the next level! Seasonal fruits are always a winner!! Right now I’m using peaches but as temperatures start to cool, apples with cinnamon will be fun twist. Make your botanical bowl tropical by using fruits like coconut, pineapple, & mango. The options are endless!

I prefer to make my botanical granola in a shallow, bowl with a larger circumference to show off all the goodies I add in, but any soup or cereal bowl will work!

To your bowl, add:
•1 Cup Granola
•Chopped fruit (berries, bananas, peaches, pomegranate, or whatever you have in hand)
•Nuts (chopped, sliced, raw or toasted)
•Seeds (chia, pumpkin, hemp hearts, sunflower)
•Mint (roll mint leaves and slice thin)
•Edible Flower Petals
•Milk (any kind you like or sub for yogurt)

Once your add milk, enjoy immediately! 🌱

Striped Armenian Cucumbers are one of my most-est, favorite-est things to grow! One healthy plant can sometimes give me 15-ish cukes a week! What gardener wouldn’t feel like a million bucks with a plant that produces like that?!? {Esp when it’s 🔥🔥🔥outside and not much else is growing!} I’ve grown them for a few years and have kinda figured out where they seem happiest in my yard.

This past spring, I grew my own starts, planted several in the ground, and my armenian cucumber plant babies took off and started filling a bed with leaves and vines as I expected them to. We even harvested several great cukes!! But then something happened. Leaves started dying, then parts of vines, and before I knew it, there wasn’t a single trace of armenian cucumbers left in my bed. Every single plant had died. I was M-A-D! I felt like a failure!! I wanted to completely give up on all gardening! One of the most frustrating aspects is that I have no idea why they all died. 🤷🏼‍♀️ So here I am, harvesting limes, basil, and mint ….

Gardening is calling my name again. It’s my therapy, which I really need right now in my life. One of the amazing things about gardening is that there’s always another chance to try! I love that!! {Have you noticed that the garden is full of life lessons?} So I’ve got some starts growing & Hubby is getting some fresh dirt and compost in the beds and we’re looking forward to lots of gardening … at least for the next 9 months!!

Family time & meals begin in the kitchen. Kids listen to their bodies and always know when it’s time to start working on dinner. On days when there is a meal plan, they gather ingredients and push a tired mom to the kitchen. The littlest ones can wash veggies, peel carrots, and stir ingredients. Bigger helpers can watch a hot pot and help cut ingredients. Children learn to create, use their hands, & problem solve. Each child feels important & is excited to help. We get into a groove, turn on our favorite tunes, and soon making dinner is no longer a chore to be done as we savor the textures, sounds, and smells of the kitchen.

Sometimes stories of the past are shared about where a recipe came from. Children learn about their heritage and who they are. Holidays are celebrated and traditions created based on what happens in the kitchen.

By cooking something together, we show that health, time together, and quality food is more important than convenience.

Spend a little time connecting with someone in the kitchen this week. All you need is 5 minutes!
